Deer Management

Deer control & Cull planning | Surveys & Reporting | Deer Damage Prevention for crops, gardens & woodland | How we work & What you can expect

Deer management control is the practical work on the ground: culling, population reduction, and ongoing site management. If you are looking for the structured framework that directs that work, including grant compliance and written plans, see Deer Management Planning. →

Deer management is rarely about doing one thing once. It is about understanding what is happening on your ground, setting a clear objective, then taking consistent, sensible action that protects habitat, crops and animal welfare.

At Deer Management Services, we support estates, landowners and farmers with practical deer control and cull planning, survey work, and clear reporting where it’s needed. The aim is simple: healthy deer in balance with the environment, and fewer unpleasant surprises for you as the season moves on.

If you are not sure what the right approach is, that is normal. A short conversation usually identifies what matters most on your site and what a realistic plan looks like.

How much will it cost? – No Charge

Routine deer management is provided at no charge where an agreed long-term management arrangement is in place.

Why Manage Deer

In the absence of natural predation, it falls to people to manage ever-growing deer populations, but to manage them with care, with respect and with reference to scientific knowledge and research.

Deer management is more than culling. It takes into account population dynamics, habitat condition, seasonal behaviour and land use objectives to ensure deer remain healthy and in balance with their environment.

Effective management means fewer crop losses, better woodland regeneration, reduced deer-vehicle collisions and habitats that can recover. Left unmanaged, deer pressure compounds quickly and becomes significantly harder and more costly to address.

How We Work

Every call out begins with a consultation.

We listen first and establish what you need and what matters on your ground. We consider access, safety, welfare and any site sensitivities before setting out a clear and proportionate plan. You can expect a professional service delivered quietly, respectfully and confidentially at all times.

Our approach is rooted in structured assessment and continuous monitoring of deer health, population dynamics and environmental impact. Decisions are based on evidence gathered on site, ensuring management remains effective, responsible and adaptable to changing conditions.

Routine deer management and sustainable culling are carried out free of charge where an agreed long-term management arrangement is in place.

Where more detailed professional input is required, such as Deer Management Plans, Impact Assessments, habitat surveys or formal reporting linked to grant schemes, these services are priced separately. This reflects the additional time, technical evaluation and written documentation involved.

The objective remains the same in every case: practical deer management that protects your land, supports your objectives and stands up to scrutiny where required.

Structured Night Deer Management (CL55 Licensed)

Where deer pressure continues despite sensible daytime control, night operations can form part of a proportionate management response.

Under the Natural England CL55 licence, night shooting is a lawful tool when undertaken within a clear framework. It is not an alternative to planning. It is part of it.

At Deer Management Services, night control is delivered only where justified by site conditions and agreed objectives. Each location is assessed individually. Boundaries are defined. Risk is considered carefully. Written landowner authority is in place before any operation proceeds.

Operations are formally notified to Natural England in advance and reported within the required timeframe. Work is conducted within open seasons and aligned with wider management objectives, whether agricultural protection, woodland regeneration or habitat conservation.

Night control carries increased responsibility. It demands discipline, documentation and accountability. Our approach ensures that where night operations are required, they are carried out lawfully, professionally and in a manner that stands up to scrutiny.
